PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The South Miami Owner’s Guide

PGT sliding and patio doors in South Miami typically cost $1,850 to $5,400 installed, depending on size, series, and impact-rating requirements. We stock PGT-compatible rollers, handles, locks, and weatherstripping on our trucks, and most common part swaps finish the same visit. Homeowners usually discover a failing part the hard way: the door suddenly drags, the latch won’t bite, or water beads up along the track after a heavy South Miami downpour.

Call (850) 930-1813

If your PGT door is binding, leaking, or refusing to lock, the fix is usually a specific four-dollar roller or a worn latch assembly, not a whole new door. That’s the conversation we have most often, and it’s one Ed Winslow has been having with South Miami neighbors since 2011.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

We work on PGT’s residential sliding glass door lines including the 5500, 5700, and 7700 series, plus the WinGuard and PremierVue patio door configurations. The compatibility gotcha most South Miami owners run into is roller sizing: PGT uses at least four different roller diameters across its series, and a roller from a 5500 will not seat properly in a 7700 track, it just ruins the new roller and chews the rail.

To identify what you have, look for the PGT etch in the corner of the glass, then the small white or silver sticker on the door edge with the series number. If that sticker is gone, which happens often after years of sun and salt, we measure the roller housing width and the glass thickness to pin it down. For OEM parts, PGT’s factory components are well-made but often carry a 2 to 4 week lead time and a premium price. Quality aftermarket equivalents from Caldwell, Prime-Line, and All-Glass Parts commonly match or exceed OEM tolerance for about 40 to 60 percent less. We stock both, and we tell you the price difference before we turn a screw.

One more South Miami-specific note: PGT’s coastal impact doors use a heavy-gauge stainless steel roller axle. If the door was installed before 2018 within a few miles of the coast, that axle is worth checking because salt-driven corrosion eats the cheap versions fast. We replace worn axles with stainless as standard.

Signs Your PGT Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing

  • Dragging or grinding when sliding. This is almost always a collapsed or corroded roller. South Miami humidity ages the nylon wheel and the steel axle together, and once the wheel stops spinning, it files a flat spot and the door slides on raw metal.
  • Lock won’t engage or the handle feels loose. PGT multi-point locks rely on a thin internal gear that strips over time. If the handle turns but the hook doesn’t extend, the lock body is done, not the strike plate.
  • Water pooling on the interior track. The weep holes on PGT frames are small and clog with dust, pollen, and the fine sand that blows through South Miami. When they clog, water has nowhere to go but inside.
  • Fog between the glass panes. That means the insulated glass seal has failed. It is not repairable, and on impact-rated PGT units the glass has to be ordered to match your exact laminate spec.
  • Door is hard to unlock with a key, or the key spins. The key cylinder on PGT patio door locks is a weak point, especially with keys that have worn down. Once the cylinder pins flatten, the whole handle assembly usually gets replaced.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In South Miami, expect to pay $45 to $150 for a single roller replacement including parts and labor, $120 to $220 for a complete handle and lock assembly, and $180 to $340 for a full track clean, roller swap, and alignment. A full glass pack replacement on a PGT impact door runs $900 to $1,800 depending on size and glass spec. Here is how the common items break down:

  • Roller replacement (per roller): $45 to $150 installed
  • Handle and lock assembly: $120 to $220 installed
  • Weatherstripping, full perimeter: $90 to $210 installed
  • Full door tune-up (rollers, track, lock, seals): $180 to $340
  • Glass pack replacement: $900 to $1,800

Every quote is a fixed line-item number. You’ll see exactly what a part costs and what our labor costs, and that number does not move once the work starts. The Done Right Promise applies to every part we install: if it fails because we did something wrong, we come back and fix it. No fine print, no chasing a national chain’s outsourced warranty department.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can do safely: clean the bottom track with a stiff brush and a vacuum, check the weep holes with a small wire, and note where the door binds. Those observations save you money because they help us pinpoint the problem quickly.

What you should not do: pull a PGT sliding door panel out of its frame to replace rollers yourself. A PGT impact door panel weighs 180 to 300 pounds, and without a panel lifter and a second set of hands, the panel drops, the glass breaks, and someone gets hurt. Same warning applies to the multi-point lock: the internal chassis is under tension, and prying it apart with household tools leaves you with a broken lock and a door that won’t secure. A sliding glass door is the widest opening in most South Miami homes, and a door that won’t lock is an invitation. Call (850) 930-1813 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician who knows this exact door.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"The installation was clean and the windows are beautiful. The factory took about six weeks to deliver the units, which Ed told me upfront, but living behind plywood-framed openings in the meantime still tested my patience."

GGuadalupe Zamorano
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."

OOdessa Fairbanks
★★★★★

"We sat out a hurricane behind the windows Ed put in. The gusts threw a neighbour's trampoline down the street and the loudest thing in our house was the kettle. I rang him after to say thank you and he answered his own phone, same as always."

TThaddeus Okonkwo
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."
